Nasal Snuff Information

How To Take Nasal Snuff?

The most popular use of snuff is to take a pinch between your thumb and forefinger and sniff it lightly into the nose or it can be sniffed with the modern bullets available. Take a pinch of snuff between your thumb and forefinger. Holding the pinch to the left nostril, release part of it with a short, sharp sniff and then repeat the exercise into the right nostril.

You will probably sneeze at first, but this is entirely natural. Persevere by taking another two pinches within the next half hour and you should find that the desire to sneeze has disappeared. You should now begin to experience that indefinable "lift" which a good snuff gives.

Snuff provides a pleasant aroma, lasting 15-20 minutes, as well as a noticeable nicotine lift. Many pipe smokers have also taken to the old English act of adding a sprinkle of their favorite snuff into their burning bowl of pipe tobacco for an added aroma, taste, and nicotine boost.

The pinch

* Begin with small pinches.
* Inhale the snuff very gently. That brings the greatest enjoyment.
* Allow yourself a few seconds after inhaling your pinch of snuff. That way, you can really relish the snuff's satisfying aroma and enjoy the prickling sensation of refreshment it gives.

Inhaling

* It is definitely not frowned upon to sneeze after a pinch of snuff. However, the more regularly you take snuff, the less you have to sneeze.
* It is entirely up to you to decide whether you prefer to inhale the snuff from the back of your hand or your fingertips. What matters is the enjoyment that follows.

Moisture

* A snuff has to be slightly moist. If at any time it does not flow from the tin as easily as usual, it is often enough to give the tin a short tap, to loosen the snuff again.

Snuff History

The 16th century was dominated by the influence of tobacco. It was regarded as a cure for all sorts of ailments. But there was hardly another form of medicine that was as popular as this extraordinary plant, by virtue of its remarkable taste. Even the French queen, Catherine de' Medici, hoped to employ it to cure her son, Francis, from his migraine headaches. Today, it is impossible to tell whether she misunderstood the directions for use at the time, or whether she simply chose to ignore them. One way or the other, she disregarded the physician's recommendations and invented a completely new form of tobacco enjoyment. Catherine administered her son the powdered tobacco by the spoonful. However, this treatment failed to relieve his symptoms. Nevertheless, it is apparently thanks to the queen's pronounced resourcefulness that she persuaded her son to inhale the powder through his nose. This unconventional method had its effect. The tickling feeling Francis had in his nose led to an attack of sneezing; the pressure inside his head subsided and the pain disappeared. The first snuffer did exactly what a real snuffer does not do - he sneezed.

Overjoyed by the effect her invention had produced, the queen also indulged in a pinch of this powder, which was the cause of considerable exhilaration. On the spur of the moment, she named the powdered tobacco after herself and decreed that it be termed 'catherinaire’ – a designation it was to retain for several centuries. It was not long before the courtiers, both male and female, followed their queen's example. Such was their desire to imitate their majesty's gracious sneezing that the aristocracy began competing with one another.

Inhaling tobacco became a socially acceptable practice. Only a few decades after the memorable birth of nasal snuff, people all over the world were turning up their noses - with pleasure.

The production of snuff

Snuff, its manufacturing and blending processes

The raw material for the production of snuff is the same tobacco that is cultivated worldwide and employed in the manufacture of cigarettes, fine-cut, pipe tobacco and cigarillos/cigars. Different kinds of tobacco, also referred to as provenances or grades, are processed depending on the purpose for which they are intended. However, the manufacturing methods are, generally speaking, different for snuff than for other tobacco products.

Raw tobaccos

The word "snuff" actually comes from England and is used nowadays for the modern interpretation of inhaling tobacco. Usually, light varieties of tobacco from the USA and Africa are used in the production of snuff. Between ten and twenty carefully selected and inspected kinds produce a good mixture for the final product.

The grinding process and powdered tobacco

For the production of snuff, the dry, raw tobacco is divided into categories and ground to tobacco powder in a high-speed mill.

This mill was designed especially for grinding tobacco to produce exceptionally fine, uniform granules.
