Mocca, Granit and Retro Snus from FL Snusas early as 1783...The Fiedler & Lundgren company was founded in 1835, but its history started half a century earlier. In 1783, master tailor Samuel Fiedler applied to the Gothenburg city authorities for permission to start producing snus. When Samuel Fiedler died, his second son Magnus took over the snus production. The business expanded, and by 1809 they were producing 3 tonnes of snus, representing one tenth of snus sales in Gothenburg. Spin-offs and name changesIn 1820, Magnus Fiedler handed over the business to two employees, and the company Fiedler, Lindström & Co was formed. However, some years later Magnus Fiedler decided to resume making snus. He later handed over the business to his son August, who together with Fredrik Lundgren formed the company still called Fiedler & Lundgren. Fiedler & Lundgren in new handsAugust Fiedler died in the autumn of the same year that the new company was founded, and Fredrik Lundgren continued to manage the company. He did so successfully up to 1 April 1865, when the company was handed over to two employees, Anders Fredrik Nilsson and his brother Ivar S. Nilsson. Under the management of the Nilsson family, Fiedler & Lundgren produced and marketed several products - Svart Snus, Äkta Rapé, Prestsnus, Grofsnus, Fint Snus och Generalen. Snus with similar names have continued to the present day. The tobacco monopolyIn 1915, The Swedish Government set up a tobacco monopoly in Sweden. The idea was that Fiedler & Lundgren would also be incorporated into this business, and they were offered the opportunity of producing snus under contract to the Government. But Harald Nilsson, who at the time was managing the company, rejected this offer with contempt. DenmarkHarald Nilsson had previously met a Danish lawyer called Aage Smith who owned a Danish tobacco wholesaler. They agreed to work together, and on 6 May 1915 Aktiesellskapet Fiedler & Lundgren was founded in Copenhagen. The business was subsequently taken over by Aage Smith’s father, Harald Smith. But perhaps the most important person during these years was the caretaker Emil Jensen, who had worked for the company since its foundation and continued to work for Fiedler & Lundgren in Copenhagen until his retirement in 1950. It was Emil who guarded the secret recipe for making snus, and he personally checked that all the ingredients were mixed in the correct proportions. Granit Snus
