Our Nick & Johnny, Strong Portion Review

Launched in 2007 and made by Swedish Match in Göteborg, Sweden, Nick & Johnny Stark is classified as a regular type portion which, as you may remember from reading our other reviews, means that each portion goes thru a final step in the manufacturing process that add a bit more moisture to the portions. This added moisture aids the flavors in the snus to marry better and release its flavor faster when it’s in the lip. The material that Swedish Match uses for Nick & Johnny Stark is the same, soft material that they use in all their snus and is comfortable in the lip for as long as the flavor lasts which averages about 2 hours. Each can of Nick & Johnny Stark contains 24, one gram portions with each having 11 mg of Nicotine. Nick & Johnny’s can is made of light gray plastic with a pearlescent sheen. There is a used portion compartment in the lid as well but, you’re here for the flavor not a review of the can so, let’s take a look at the flavor! Swedish Match describes Nick & Johnny Stark’s flavor as having a rich tobacco flavor but, some of you may not know what a rich tobacco flavor really tastes like so, we’ll do our best to describe it! Tobacco had an earthy, leather type flavor that reminds us of the fall season. Why Fall, you ask? It’s the leaves! Imagine sitting in a pile of freshly raked leaves with a new leather jacket on. That scent is pretty close to the flavor of the high quality tobacco in Nick & Johnny Stark but, it’s not the only flavor. There’s also the light flavors of licorice and a slight smokiness that really adds a bit of character to the snus. There is also a bit of saltiness that’s typical of all Swedish snus and it really brings the flavors together to create a snus that we feel will be a great starter snus for the folks new to higher Nicotine level snus but, this is what we think. We want to know your thoughts! So, why not give Nick & Johnny Stark snus a try with your next order and leave a review letting us know what you taste. We’ll be looking forward to reading it!

This snus is doing the job for me. Only snusing for 1.5 years, I tried them all, and was comfortably settled on Skruf Stark. Nick and Johnny is definitely the next best thing-- as a matter of fact, after a two-can adjustment period, I am perfectly happy with the product.
I was very disappointed when I found I could no longer get Skruf in the US, but I am so happy to have found Nick & Johnny Strong-- simply an excellent product.
There are slight (very slight) differences in bag material texture, length of flavor, and I experience a tiny bit more throat burn at the beginning, but nothing unmanageable.
What I love is that N&J and Skruf have the most important criteria in common: flavor and effect! The flavor is described well in other comments below-- pure, rich, robust, dark tobacco. I do find Nick & Johnny to be even more "cigar-like" than Skruf, and I like it a lot. I no longer care for the strong citrus notes in General.
The nicotine delivery is effective, and quite comparable to Skruf. I'd be interested to know what other Skruf refugees are using now.

I like this better than General Sterk, Onyx, and O2.

I have been a pipe and cigar smooker for many years and enjoy the taste of fine rich tobacco. Nick and Johnny strong portion fits the bill for me. When the tingle wears off the rich tobacco taste stays on and on. If you love the taste of realy good tobacco you may want to try this one. Five stars for sure.

One word - harsh. Granted I am a relative nube but I could barely tolerate one. The can went back in the fridge for a rainy and SNUSless day. Bought an assortment box and maybe they will seem better as I try more brands. So far, Camel (meh), Marlboro Rich (OK) and General Portion (very good). I have eight more brands to sample from my assortment box.

Anyway, I'm loving SNUS and haven't had a cig since day one.

A wonderfully delightful Snus. Very smooth and rich. Imagine the finest cigar you have smoked and times it by 10. My fave so far. Although I love the hit I get from Skruf Stark, this is one I can leave in for hours and still enjoy the taste. A really nice thing to behold...

N&J Strong is potent and flavorful, but loses points with me for drip. One benefit of snus (for me) is that it can be spit-free. I can keep N&J Strong portions in the lip for no longer than 10 minutes. Wish it were drip-free and came in those new longer portions that fit more comfortably in the lip.

This is the king of Snus! I have tried nearly every Thunder type, General regular and white, Onyx, Skruf stark and Xtra stark, O2, Nick and Johnny Black (which is like onyx). This is the best of them all. Nice and rich with a smokey flavor. It's delicious. smile:)

Rich leathery smooth tobacco flavor without too much salt. Nice change from Citrus. Did not taste any licorice. In my top five next to Onyx, 1847, Claq Qui and L.D. Black.

Simply my fav at the moment (2 years). Was using Skruf Stark for a couple of years, but I find the Skruf has a very strong nic onset. The Nick is smooth over time. As to flavor, I find the Nick to be very earthy and pleasant with just the right amount of salt. I now find the Skruf to be rather one dimensional and bitter after 20 minutes. The Nick just keeps on giving and is more refined and understated.

Wow!! Talk about a kick in the seat! If you need a pick-me-up this is definitely the brand to go for. Strong and long-lasting.

I am very new to snus. i first tried the US Camel snus, and was extremeley dissapointed. i wasn't sure what to expect when trying Swedish snus, i ordered five different types after getting over the initial shock of how different Swedish snus tastes from anything i've ever tried before i decided that This is by far my favorite. It has a rich, smokey tobacco flavor, with a good balance of salt, not too much. The nicotice kick is very strong and lasts for a good long while, as does the flavor. I would reccomend this highly, even though i am inexperienced i am confident that this is one of the best snus' out there.
jimmmyjazz, 02/20/2010 01:38:45
That's the shit !!!! Very very good snus !!!! Nice nic kick and the tobacco flavor is awesome.
I love it !!!! One of my regular basis. Great with beer smile;)
GeneralEivind, 01/11/2010 09:59:32
This is the best portion snus in the world. The feeling, the size and the taste is just awsome. It is NOTHING better than a nick and johnny portion in the morning or after dinner. I can feel the tobacco from it every sunday morning. smile8)
GladiusGSF, 12/05/2009 19:56:21
I was disappointed by this. It tasted like a black jelly bean that had been rolled around in an ashtray then dipped in salt. Meh..not for us all I guess. smile;)

Im new to snus, every time I order different ones so that I can try as many as I can.Till now,I have tried most of the brands in here. For some reason,I can not get accustomed to loose,(I like to change places in my mouth and thats a big problem with loose)so I now order only portion. From all the cans I have tried,N&J is my favourite. Some brands are too salty(general),some others have a fast nicotine hit and then nothing(thunder),some others upset my stomach(claq qui),some dont have a good taste(ettan),some are very bitter after a while(skruf)....anyway,the first snus that really satisfied me is N&J,great tobacco taste, not too salty, great nic hit which builds up gradually and lasts, and it doesnt upset my stomach. One other thing is that it doesnt drip(it acts like white portion but doesnt get slimy like white portion does).I now have to try the black version.
rockstar.1, 11/17/2009 19:41:50
This is a really good snus tastes like pure tobacco with a hint of sweetness to me, the nicotine hit is strong and lasts about 2 hours between pouches so is good for work and down the pub but drinking can lead to chain snusing lol. buy some you wont regret it in fact you will be glad you did.
badlands, 09/18/2009 21:57:22
Overrated in my opinion. Reminds me of burnt rubber and leather. Shoe leather express! Nothing about this was smooth. One positive is the nic kick. It hits harder than other snus that have substantially higher nicotine contents. I'll leave this one for people with much more hair on their chest than I.
toddwillms1, 09/16/2009 15:50:13
Excellent flavor and it even lasts longer than my former favorite claq qui! I have gone over to using loose due to the fact that it lasts much longer but this one lasts and the flavor is excellent,if you are thinking of trying a starker snus, try this one first!
JMPreston, 09/05/2009 18:19:03
easily one of my favorites -- the flavor is hard to describe-- try it for yourself. it's definitely strong and definitely good smokey, full bodied with a hint of fruitiness. i keep a can around regularly.
covetousjew, 08/12/2009 04:12:49
i found this snus to be a bit over rated the smokey flavor is a bit to much and the sweetness dose not mix to well i give it a 4-5
blampars, 07/29/2009 03:37:53
Well I've finally worked through my mixed 10 pack of snus. I'd say Nick and Johnny fell in at #2 out of all of them. Skruf Stark portions beat it out with a bit more of a mellow taste and a better nicotine hit in my opinion.

My only gripe about N&J was it seemed to be outrageously salty. It was the saltiest can of my 10 pack. After about 10 minutes it would mellow out to a nice salt and pepper taste that I could manage, but at first putting it in it's just brutal for me. I'm wondering if I possibly got a bad batch, as I haven't heard anyone else complaining of this. I didn't include any in my most recent order, but I'm sure I will be ordering a few more cans of it in the future.
immensea, 07/21/2009 03:19:35
Awesome. My buddy who started me on snus recommended this one and I just got my first can today. I love the flavor - it's more of a low-key tobacco/salt & peppery taste. I've been leaning more towards this kind of flavor with more traditional, tobacco-flavor snus like Ettan and Grov. Nick & Johnny fits the bill, and the extra vitamin N is nice. I start the day off at work with one of these, wakes me right up and gives a nice strong buzz that lasts a good while. So yah, tastes awesome, nice buzz. Plus it smells nice and the can is sweet. Basically, it rules. I would be switching to this from Ettan/Grov as my mainstay snus, but I don't want to build my tolerance up too high that I need the strong portions and don't get the same kick anymore.

I could go on and on. This stuff is awesome. Get some.
