The salmon inhabits the depths. The seers spirit could move in the lower world in the form of a salmon. It could also reach the other side of the river to the Kingdom of the Dead to fetch information concealed from mankind. Perhaps our ancestors were not all wrong since even today water is considered a symbol of the subconscious. The fish represents the link to mans real existence and to the profoundest strata of our spiritual life.
