Odin is the god of wisdom, poetry, and magic, and he sacrificed an eye for the privilege of drinking from Mimer, the fountain of wisdom. He is the source of poetic inspiration, the father of spells. It is Odin who won knowledge of the runes, the sacred letters in which learning and magic may be written, by hanging on Yggdrasil for nine days and nine nights pierced through with a spear. His two black ravens, Hugin (Thought) and Munin (Memory), flew forth daily to gather tidins of events all over the world. |
