Go back Our General, Portion ReviewIntroduced in 1985 by Swedish Match, General Portion snus is one of the most popular brands in Sweden. General portion is classified as a regular type portion meaning that each one goes thru a final step in the manufacturing process that adds a bit more moisture to each that aids the flavors in the snus to marry together and release it faster in the lip. The material that Swedish Match uses in General portion is the same soft material that they use in all their snus and remains comfortable in the lip for about 2 hours. Each can of General Portion contains 24, one gram portions with each one having 8 mg of Nicotine. The can is made of black plastic with a matte texture and the classic General logo affixed to the lid and yes, there is a used portion compartment in the lid. Now that we know the basics, let’s talk flavors! General Portion is sometimes known as General Original and the flavor is just that, original! The handpicked tobaccos from places like Honduras, Africa, Nicaragua and the U.S., among other places, give General portion an earthy, leathery flavor with black pepper and salt in the background. The other flavor element is lemon! Not bergamot like most Swedish snus but lemon. The subtle lemon flavor enhances the earthy flavors in the snus while adding a hint of bitterness that makes the pepper flavor shine thru. The subtle lemon and salty flavors combine with the tobacco and pepper tastes to create a flavor that is distinctly General but, this is our opinion, we want to hear what you think of General Portion! This is the first snus i tried and is still my number 1 choice.
Strong flavour, good nic hit and long lasting. General is a real mans snus, even the white portion and the minis smash all other brands.

My first foray into the true snus experience! General Ridge became what I call a dinner snus, a snus that complments a salmon or Ahi tuna meal or goes with any pasta dish. The flavor dead on to what users have been describing, that of a grilled lemon and what I have noticed, a Starbucks Black Iced Tea Lemonade! The moistness was a bit of a surprise the first time but it did not deter me from using. What makes this even better is when I have one in and decide for a flavor change, I switch to the Mint and it's like freakin candy
Recently bought Gen Los and found that the taste isn't quite as strong as the Ridge, but I really don't mind as long as the taste is there! Time of portion really doesn't apply with what I've heard, the Rigde, Mint, White, and Mini Mint can last me a full day at work and keep flavor (though i regularly change out pouches) quite well Los goes til the pris I badly baked fails about an hour or so in.
Will buy again on the Ridge

My first order contained one can of General portion. Since I'm new to the world of snus I must admit that it took some getting used to.
 In South Africa we only have Peter Stuyvesant snus that comes in three different flavours: Coffee, Mint and Peppermint. Terrible Stuff!!  I tried three different Swedish brands nl. Ettan, General and Skruf Stark. The General brand is definately the best tasting!! Sits comfortable in the lip and lasts about 1-2 hours.
This will definately be part of future orders!!!

Smells great and has a classic tobacco taste. Every time I open the can--ahhhh...
I bought an assorted ten pack and this is on the short list so far. I can see why it is a popular brand. One nitpick--could be a bit stronger though. I had to resist the urge to double up.

Package came in the mail today. I concur with the statements of others. The smell is that of an earl gray tea. Once tucked in the lip, you can feel and taste the salt - I do not find it to be overpowering. The taste of lemon soon follows. Little to no drip thus far, and a lingering taste of tea, lemon, and a hint of salt in the back of my mouth. Wonderful, refined, classic. Cannot wait to taste a cold portion.

If you are looking for a dark traditional tobacco flavor, you will love this brand. On the flip of that coin, if you are used to minty American style tobacco, you will not be able to stomach this brand.

I have stopped smoking with snus and just tried this one it is a great everyday snus, good taste.

Just a good all-around snus. Nothing bad to say. I definetly prefer the regular to the white portion although both are good. I generally use Thunder Frosted as my first prtion of the day and usually a couple more but that stuff is way too strong to be using all day long. General Portion is perfect as an all-day snus. I alway keep a can in my car. In the event I leave my Thunder at home General gets me through no problem. I will probably never stop using nicotine but I am so glad to have found snus after smoking for 15+ years I have been using snus exclusively for 2 years now. And thank god the Northener now have a US warehouse!!! I get my snus in a day or two which makes planning when to order a whole lot easier. Fortunatelyhere in Boston there are a couple smoke shops that carry General and Ettan but its almost $10 USD per can! The price of this makes smoking seem so rediculous.

I'm not a big fan of portion snus and to be honest I really didn't care for General too much at first (I'm an Ettan los man myself) but I was waiting on my shipment of Ettan to come in and running very low on my lossnus. I went to the only tobacco shop in my entire state that sells any snus at all because I know they have General (the only brand they sell period) and I was just going to buy a can of los to last til the Ettan arrived. They didn't have los so I settled for portion and was pleasantly surprised. When it comes to General I like the portions way better than the los and I'm not sure why. Pretty good stuff.

Boring flavor and really no nic hit. If you want the good stuff get the general xtra sterk and you will be happy. I tossed the rest of this can once the xtra sterk arrived.

General portion is a perfect every day snus. Mild but not too mild smokey flavor, nice tobacco scent, moist, and moderately long lasting. An excellent mid-day snus.

Welcome to the tradition of Snus!
Read the history! As a hardcore snuser since an early age, It has always been General for me. When I first moved to the US I started smoking since I couldn't find any snus here..then I tried dip..copenhagen mostly (since its the closest resemblance to the north I could find), and then I found "Northerner" and my life is complete once again. Anyone who complains that this snus is "wet" or makes you "queasy", you are just not SNUS enough. In Sweden they would kick your behind for saying such nonsense. This is a manly snus, just ask my grandfather. I'm not trying to say that Thunder and such aren't manly, but General sets the base line for a man's snus. In Sweden Women snus catch..goteborgs rape, etc. I'm glad to know that we have avid snus fans outside of Scandinavia for once, so big thumbs up to all of you for daring to think outside the box!

I think I might have gotten a bad can, or something. I heard such good things about General and was excited to try it, but I've really been disappointed. The lemon flavor mixed really poorly with the tobacco flavor, and it just came off tasting like a dirty citrus. I popped a portion in, and it immediately made me kinda queasy. After 15 minutes or so, I gave up and just switched to a portion of Göteborgs Rapé. I really want to like this snus, but for now, it's going back in the freezer.

One of my favorites. Perfect blend of moistness and smooth tobacco flavor that lasts for quite a while. It is accompanied by a nice mild nicotine kick. The General helped me greatly in the first couple of months with kicking my smoking habit.

The General Original Portion is a snus with a good taste, but i think its a little bit too wet.

I'm back and ready to finish my reviews of every snus I've ordered. I took a break because I noticed after a while of snusing that my tastes were changing, some snus I liked before I didn't anymore, and others I didn't enjoy, I did now.
Such is the case here. I didn't like General at all. It has become standard on every order now. The bag material is soft and comfortable. The citrus taste is pretty much just lemon, but goes surprisingly well with tobacco. Nicotine content is pretty much average for snus, so it won't knock you on your bum like Thunder or leave you wanting more like Catch. (Catch is delicious, by the way, just not enough kick for me) It's easy to see why this is one of the most popular, and will always be in my rotation.

i actually quit smoking using smokeless tobacco, started last year with skoal pouches which i found powerful especially as i wasnt used to them, then when camel snus came out tried them, liked it at first but within a week they were too weak for me. and slimy and sweet...paaah!
so i found a shop that stocks general and bought some original portion...didnt like the flavour at first...but persevered and got used to it. tp be honest, i think its ok....i MUCH prefer the white portion, i love the wedge shape that fits perfectly and for me at least, i find the white portion comes on strong and lasts much longer...i tend to suck on the original portion and extract all the juices....i spit it out when it starts to get that bitter taste, normally within half an hour. its a decent product but i only give it 6 or 7 out of 10....onyx on the other hand...10 out of 10!!!

what else can i say about general that hasn't been said before -- it's the most popular brand for a reason -- it says right on the can " the one taste" and it really is -- nothing tastes quite like general, and that's a great thing - the flavor is spot on - the tobacco flavor is perfectly tempered by the citrus to make for a very pleasurable experience

I moved quickly from American tobacco to snus, due largely to the incredible flavor and mild nicotine kick of General portions. This is definitely my favorite snus, and has even been a huge hit around the office.
