Gustavus Slim Cut Blue

“Boy, was I in for a surprise!”

Gustavus Slim Cut Blue

I waited eagerly for my first review can to come in the mail, and was excited when they finally arrived. I eagerly opened my package and was greeted by a new face. A handsome can, white as the driven snow, emblazoned with a large blue S on it.I’m not familiar with the Gustavus brand nor any of their products, so I was looking forward to trying something new.

Now, to be fair, in the United States, there seems to be a default color-coding of flavors. It goes something like this:

Green – any generic “mint” flavor, but usually spearmint. Occasionally wintergreen.
Blue – Peppermint
Red – Cinnamon
Orange – Orange or some citrus-y variant

That being said, I, in my limited mindset, assumed what I was getting was a slim minty portion.

Boy, was I in for a surprise. I cracked open the can and discovered a scent that was both familiar and yet new. I’ve had the classic snus flavoring before, that bergamot-infused tobacco aroma. There’s definitely some of that in the aroma here, but with the Slim Blue it’s that (or a mind trick) plus an added floral/herbal scent that fills the nose with memories of a fresh spring day. Although I am a huge mint fan by default, I’m always open to new things, so I couldn’t wait to try this.

The portions are incredibly soft to the touch, and being white portions they are quite dry as well. Placing one in the lip is a sensory joy. It goe in easily, and the size plus the softness of the portion make adjustments in the lip completely unnecessary.

The nicotine is mild, at least to me. There’s no “rush” you’d get with a strong snus. Rather, it comes to you gently over the course of five to ten minutes. The flavor does remind me of that classic snus mix I mentioned before, but the juniper in the mix also smacks of a good gin. It’s present, and you know it’s there, but it’s also not bludgeoning you with its flavor. Overall, the flavor is quite pleasant and a nice change from what I normally use. Being one who likes to keep a portion in while I work, I found that I could handle a coffee or other beverage without the need to remove the portion. I kept my portions in for about 90 minutes on average before the drip made me need to remove it.

If you’re a fan of the bergamot snus flavoring, you’d really enjoy Gustavus Slim Blue. It’s familiar but just different enough to make it a refreshing change.
While it doesn’t click with my preferences, I can spot a good thing when I see it. It might not make its way into my favorites, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed this as something off the beaten path I tread, something that reminds me that good snus isn’t limited to just what you prefer, but can be found in unexpected places.

Skruf Slim Rålakrits White

“a sweet tobacco taste pop through the licorice flavor”

Hey guys!! Today I will be reviewing Skruf Rålakris for you, I hope you all enjoy!

So on opening a can of the Rålakris snus you are greeted by a lovely gentle aroma of Licorice with a slight tobacco hint there also. It smells great!
I found that the portions were quite a bit dryer then most white portion snuses but I actually preferred that.  But even with that said the portions were still a good size and fitted really comfortably under my lip.

Once placed under the lip you get a great almost sweet tasting licorice flavor come through pretty quickly after you have moistened the portion. After about 15 minutes I started to notice a sweet tobacco taste pop through the licorice flavor. The flavor of this snus holds up well though and still tastes great a good 45 minutes into the portion. With no noticeable drip until about the same time.

It is only a regular strength snus mind so a bit weaker then the snuses I normally favor but I still really enjoyed it and will most definitely be having it again in the future.

So in my books Skruf Rålakris gets an easy

Hop(e) and Glory White Portion

“I’m absolutely in love with it”

Hop(e) and Glory White Portion Snus by Conny Andersson.

On opening the can you are greeted by a lovely sweet citrus aroma with some flowery hints. The portions themselves are dry even for a white portion snus, but that didn’t bother me one bit. And when you first place one under your lip there is a lovely citrus flavor which is quite fruity and slightly flowery, and tastes great after a little while the flavor starts changing to a more herbal and IPA oriented flavor. Which is great you don’t get a strong tobacco taste with this one at all. Overall the flavor of this snus is very gentle and long lasting and I found lasts for about an hour plus, and you don’t get a noticeable drop until about 50 minutes in.

This snus would be a great snus for someone who hasn’t used snus before or is still fairly new to snus.

I’m absolutely in love with it and will be making a very often appearance under my lip.

Epok Ice Cool Mint

“The peppermint punches you right in the face”

Gimmicks and innovations. Both have strong selling power, new and exciting features, and make you want to get your hands on them. With a gimmick, though, those selling points don’t actually come to fruition, and you likely don’t care about getting your hands on the product anymore after the initial use. An innovation, on the other hand, is a game-changer in its realm. It lives up to the hype, and leaves you wanting more. So what is Epok white snus? A gimmick or a true snus innovation? Let’s find out.

Epok has this line of white snus. Not ‘white’ in the sense that we think of the more dry, no-moisture-added snus, white in the sense that it is physically and visually white. The tobacco is washed and somehow cleansed of all brown color, leaving it white, before then packaging in white pouches. They claim that this removes nitrosamines and heavy metals. The actual process is somewhat vague, though. I’d like to know what exactly goes into the cleansing, as I don’t think water alone could do this. But hey, I’m no scientist.

Let’s get onto the actual snus review. This review is of the Ice Cool Mint slim version, which is also the only strong portion flavour that Epok sells. The others are regular strength. I’ll break it down like I usually do.

The tin is clear plastic and looks really cool. I can see how many portions I have left without opening it up. The snus also does not need to be refrigerated. I can verify that this is true, as I left mine out of the fridge, and it did not clump up or get hard in any way. Stayed fresh to the last portion. The pouch material seems a little weak. The portions stuck together a bit, and when I pulled them apart, the material stretched a bit. That being said, not one portion broke on me (as I have read in other reviews), and I was able to fluff the portions like I normally do, not that they needed much fluffing. I’d be interested to know a little more about this pouch material, as it is very soft and comfortable. Will it live up to continued use? Only more testing will tell, but for now, I’d say that it’s a good material.

The aroma is very strong. The peppermint punches you in the face right when the tin is opened. To me, it is pleasant, but sort of seems a little artificial. I guess that’s how most “ice-flavored” products are. Almost toothpaste-like. There isn’t a lot of tobacco aroma, maybe that is due in part to how the tobacco is washed.

The strength is perfect. There is no doubt that this is strong. I’d even bargain that it could be called extra strong. I got a very pleasing, strong tingle from this stuff. The nicotine hit me quick, and lasted a good 30 to 45 minutes. I’d be interested in trying Epok’s regular strength varieties, as I bet they have a good amount of punch to them as well. As time goes on, and the portion gets moist, there is a good tobacco flavour, that is fairly mild, but evident. Nice and well-rounded.

Overall, this Epok Ice Cool snus is mild in flavour, yet very strong. I wouldn’t call it my all-day snus, but it definitely works its way into my schedule frequently. So is it a gimmick or an innovation? To be honest, I’m leaning towards an innovation. The fact that they have removed the brown color, yet still maintained a classic snus feel is pretty darn unique. What I would like to know is how exactly they process it to be white. But hey, if they gave away all their secrets, that wouldn’t be a very smart innovation, now would it? For now, I’d be happy to use it again and try all the interesting flavors Epok has to offer.

Cheers

Göteborg Rapé Lingon White Large

“Reminds me of my grandmother’s kitchen”

Hey guys,

So one of the things I really like about all the snuses made by Göteborgs rapé is the presentation of the snus inside the can.
On opening the can you can smell that lovely lingonberry smell straight away followed up by a light lemon smell with some floral hints. The smell makes me hungry and reminds me of my grandmother’s kitchen.

This snus tastes as good as it smells, upon putting it under your lip you can instantly taste the lingonberry followed by some lemon notes and then that great Göteborgs original tobacco and herbal flavor. However, this snus also has a sweetness to it which can be quite nice.

This snus really stands apart from the others and is well worth trying.

Skruf Slim Mynta White

“a pick-me-up from the cya-later-summer blues”

Well, we are right at the midway point of October, and as the weather starts to turn to crap, I found myself needing a pick-me-up from the cya-later-summer blues. That pick-me-up came in the form of a can of Skruf Slim Mynta White from the fine people across the world at Northerner. Mint flavoured snus was what got me into the whole snus game in the first place, so it seems fitting to return to my roots a little bit!

The can is pretty nifty looking with a matte-finished look to it. It also sports a good sized compartment for your used portions.

When initially opening the can, I’m hit with a great aroma of fresh spearmint. What I like about this is that the aroma doesn’t seem artificial like some other mint snuses. I later found out that each tin contains one-tenth mint leaves – neato!

The portion is slim and the material is as soft as cashmere. Combine that with the fact the tobacco is very supple, it doesn’t take much fluffing to prep this portion for your lip. It’s very comfortable. The manufacturer gives it 2 out of 4 on the strength scale. I’d say that’s about accurate. Maybe 1.5 out of 4 if I was being picky. It is definitely a mild-mannered snus.

I don’t get any drips until at least the hour-mark. It is a very dry white portion. This makes it the perfect morning snus for when you wake up but still can’t get out of bed! Why, you ask? I used my tried-and-trued test method of laying in bed in multiple head positions, which usually instigates even white portions to drip, but this Skruf did not! Perfect.

The taste is what you’d expect from a mint portion. There’s not much menthol going on, just smooth spearmint and a little tobacco, which could be the result of those real mint leaves mixed in there.

Overall, a pretty tame snus, but I can definitely tell that it is high quality. If you’re a fan of mint, and want something to accompany you as you smash the snooze button on your alarm in the morning, give this Skruf a go!

Cheers

Lundgrens Skåne Vit

“By Snusers, for Snusers”

This is the tag-line you get greeted by when you’re opening a can of “Lundgrens Skåne Vit”.

A quick aroma of licorice and salmiak enters your nose when you open the can. The weird design of the little dump flap at the top greets you with a letter from the company reminding you that they are serious with their tobacco. You can also see the passion for tobacco craftsmanship with the shape of the teabags their wrapped in. It’s an interesting design, when there are holes in the bags.

“Wait a minute” I hear you ask, why would you poke holes in the bags?!

Taste, that’s the focus of Lundgrens snus. Unlike the big companies that produce such snus as “Göteborgs rapé” and “General”, which tend to have a shorter lasting taste and be a bit more runny, “Lundgrens Skåne Vit” provides taste > all. The focus on taste makes the runniness in the mouth exceedingly small, which also gives the snuser less of a dry throat.

However, while the taste lasts for a long time and provides the snuser from having a coughing fit and drinking large amounts of water which tend to ruin the taste of other snus, it’s not that strong. Other snusers are looking for the burning sensation in the lip, this does not provide that. It’s kind of tame. But like a good craft beer, It’s not about the power-level of the snus that matters, Lundgrens knows what proficient snusers are looking for and what matters, It’s taste. A long, lasting taste.

Lundgrens Skåne Vit :

Best time for the snus: Early morning, keep the can in your fridge overnight for the cold sensation (Always keep your snus fresh).

Meal and Drink: Lundgrens has a tendency to be extra tasteful after a meal of meat. Any kind of meat really. From a classic burger to pork chops. For drinks, I would recommend chandlery, ice water and coffee.

Time of the year: Autumn and early winter

Nick & Johnny Crushed Ice

“the best mint flavored snus I have ever tried”

Hi there!

Nick & Johnny Crushed Ice (White) Review:

On opening the can you get an instant hit of a really nice fresh mint smell with slight tobacco hints in the background. The portions themselves are a great size and are really comfortable under the lip, being a white portion they are dry and take a bit of saliva to really release the flavor but it is definitely worth it.

The flavor it self is a really nice combination of different mint flavors which is just right it really gives off a wonderful cooling sensation from the very start which lasts for a good while. The flavor isn’t at all overpowering which can be an issue with mint flavored snus so is a great bonus. It has a great long lasting flavor and I can keep it in for about an hour before I start noticing any dripping which again is fantastic. This is by far the best mint flavored snus I have ever tried and makes an appearance under my lip very regularly.

I would recommend this if you want to try a great mint snus.

If you tried it, please leave a comment in the commentfield!

Sincerely Matt
