10 Best Snus Products

Chad Jones

Chad “Snubie” Jones presents his ten favourite snus products.

Introduction

I’ve been reviewing snus for about 12 years now, and over the past 12 years I’ve had hundreds upon hundreds of snus products.  I’ve written almost 2,000 articles, and filmed almost 2,000 videos.  When challenged with putting together a top 10 snus products, I knew this would be an endeavor that was truly…..well…..challenging!  But, finding the proper approach to this, that would be key in forming a top 10 list.

To form this list, I approached it with a “desert island” mentality.  Basically, if I was trapped on a desert island and only had ten products, what would they be?  Or, if every snus on the market disappeared and there were only ten left that I could use from now into eternity, what would those ten products be?  Well, it certainly wasn’t an easy list to craft, but I think, in the end, I came up with a list of ten products that I would be just fine with if all the other vanished.

Göteborgs Prima Fint Lös

Flavor Description:  “A dark tobacco taste with notes of smoke, along with hints of dried fruits and rosehip.”

Can Contents:  42 grams

Nicotine Strength:  8mg/g

Why it made the list:  For this list, I knew I needed to include a good lössnus, and there was no better choice than my favorite loose product:  Prima Fint.  Sure, there are a few others out there but for me, it doesn’t get any better than Prima Fint.  It is perfectly balanced, in all senses of the word.  The tobacco flavor is perfect, with a good flavor presence, and no other nonsense to it.  Just straight up, subtle tobacco goodness.

General Original Portion

Flavor Description:  “A spicy tobacco taste with notes of bergamot and hints of tea, hay and leather.”

Can Contents:  24 grams, 24 portions, 1 gram portions

Nicotine Strength:  8.5mg/g

Why it made the list:  This was a hard one.  General is my favorite snus.  But, General also comes with a lot of different format variants.  I had to pick the right one in terms of portion format and nicotine strength.  As a regular strength guy, that narrowed it down a bit.  For portion format, I had to go with original portion, because it is the best way to enjoy this snus.  As they don’t have a slim original portion version that captures the full flavor of General, I went with the classic:  General Original Portion.  It perfectly balances the tobacco taste with bergamot, the subtle smokiness, the notes of pepper, and the grassy presence.

LD Stark Original Portion

Flavor Description:  "A soft flavor of tobacco with a hint of citrus and bergamot”.

Can Contents:  18 grams, 20 portions, 0.9 grams

Nicotine Strength:  14mg/g

Why it made the list:  LD doesn’t get talked about very much.  It’s a budget snus, so it’s not on top of anyone’s list.  However, for my money, it’s one of the best on the market.  It’s a different approach than General, with a slightly different citrus taste, not so much pepper, and a more subtle base tobacco.  But, it’s a very enjoyable flavor.

Grov Stark Original Portion

Flavor Description:  “A dark and heavy tobacco taste with notes of geranium and dried herbs along with hints of almonds wood and tar.”

Can Contents:  24 grams, 24 portions, 1 gram portions

Nicotine Strength:  15mg/g

Why it made the list:  In regards to the portion versions of Grov, the Stark version is the one I lean towards.  For some reason, with this one, I find the tobacco base to be more robust, and I find more flavor presence with this one.  It still has the geranium taste, the leathery notes, the hints of wood, but the tobacco base just comes through in a much better way.

Göteborgs Rapé XRANGE Slim White

Flavor Description:  “A mellow tobacco taste with distinct notes of lavender and juniper, along with hints of oak and citrus.”

Can Contents:  16.8 grams, 21 portions, 0.8 gram portions

Nicotine Strength:  9mg/g

Why it made the list:  Like with General, Göteborgs Rapé has a bunch of different variants in terms of portion format and strength.  This is a favorite product of mine for the balance of flavors: juniper, citrus, lavender, and herbs.  I find the best balance of flavors with GR generally comes in the white portion format.  And, as a lover of slim portions, it was easy to pick which version of GR was going to make this list!

Lundgrens Norrland Slim White

Flavor Description:  "Made from organic Swedish grown tobacco, it has a genuine tobacco taste with hints of fir tree sprout and mountain flowers.”

Can Contents:  19.2 grams, 24 portions, 0.8 gram portions

Nicotine Strength:  10mg/g

Why it made the list:  This is a product that I’ve fallen in love with more the past few years.  One of the main reasons is that I’m a big outdoorsy person.  This flavor seems to get me in touch with the outdoors.  The tobacco base is subtle, but flavors of spruce and pine come through clearly that make this a true outdoorsman’s snus!

The Lab 06 Slim Extra Strong

Flavor Description:  “A dark and spicy tobacco taste with notes of herbs, oak and cedar, along with hints of almond.”

Can Contents:  21.6 grams, 24 portions, 0.9 gram portions

Nicotine Strength:  20mg/g

Why it made the list:  This has been a long, long time favorite of mine.  It’s the strongest product on this list, and is a snus I enjoy after meals.  I like the balance of flavors on it.  It has a dark tobacco base, along with the cedar, the oak, and the nuttiness.  It is, like Norrland, an outdoorsman’s snus.  It’s also one that lovers of tobacco flavors will enjoy.  There’s a reason it’s been in my rotation year after year:  it’s that good!

Nick & Johnny Green Ice Slim White

Flavor Description:  “A mellow tobacco taste with distinct notes of spearmint and peppermint.”

Can Contents:  19.2 grams, 24 portions, 0.8g each

Nicotine Strength:  14mg/g

Why it made the list:  Yes, a mint snus had to make the list.  I primarily use mint products after I brush my teeth, so I wanted to keep one in the list.  There are so, so many mint products, so this was a challenging one.  But then again, I think I made the right choice.  I prefer spearmint over peppermint, and Green Ice has the best spearmint flavor around.  It’s not super in your face, and it is very well balanced in terms of presence.

Nick & Johnny Americana

Flavor Description:  "A dark and spicy tobacco taste with distinct notes of cherry and almond, along with hints of violets, wintergreen and raspberry.”

Can Contents:  22 grams, 20 portions, 1.1 grams each (yes, that’s over 1 gram each!)

Nicotine Strength:  15mg/g

Why it made the list:  This is one of those love/hate snus products for a lot of people.  For me, it’s a love.  Not just a love, but a deep love.  It smells like freedom.  It tastes like America, if America had a flavor.  It’s complex, in a weird but enjoyable way.  It’s like a mix of Wintergreen and Cherry Dr. Pepper and Root Beer.  I know, such a weird description!  But, it’s one of a kind and a snus that I simply could not do without.

Catch Licorice White Portion

Flavor Description:  “A mellow tobacco taste with distinct notes of salty licorice, along with hints of dried herbs.”

Can Contents:  21.6 grams, 24 portions, 0.9g each

Nicotine Strength:  8mg/g

Why it made the list:  It’s funny, when I first got into snus, I wasn’t big into licorice flavors.  I wasn’t even a fan of black licorice.  But over time, the licorice flavor grew on me.  Now, I eat black licorice all the time.  Honestly, licorice flavored snus is how that happened.  When looking at all the licorice products on the market, this one rose to the top when trying to pick the right one.  It’s the most well balanced of the licorice products, because with this one you can taste the subtle tobacco taste, along with a mix of black licorice.

Final Thoughts

Is this every good snus in the world?  No.  There are a lot of great snus products out there.  But the approach I took with this was the “desert island” approach, and in the end, I’m fine with these 10 products being the only 10 products that would continue to exist if all the others went away.  I think, in the end, I’m pretty happy with this list.  Obviously, some flavors listed above have different portion formats available and different strengths, so you can mix it up if you want to try out this list; it’s easy to make this list tailor-made to the individual, but for me, this list is about as good as it gets!
