New Type of Nicotine Pouch May Reduce Gum Irritation
A new type of nicotine pouch may help reduce the gum and mouth irritation often experienced by users of snus and traditional nicotine pouches. A pilot study published in Acta Odontologica Scandinavica found that the new design, which includes a protective barrier between the pouch contents and the gums, led to noticeable improvements in oral health after just five weeks.
Tested by Dentists
The product, Stingfree PROTEX®, was evaluated by 23 Swedish dentists who were themselves regular users of snus or nicotine pouches. For five weeks, they switched entirely to the new product. Before and after the test period, their oral health was documented through surveys and photographs, which were later reviewed by an independent dentist who was blinded to which product had been used.
Key Results
• Fewer mouth sores: Before the study, nearly all participants (96%) had oral lesions. After five weeks with the new pouch, that number had dropped to about 70%. All cases of moderate to severe lesions had disappeared.
• Reduced gum inflammation: Cases of gingivitis (gum inflammation) were completely eliminated, and overall gum irritation decreased by 90%.
• No new issues: None of the participants reported worsening oral health or new irritations during the study.
A Positive Step
By improving the user experience while also reducing health risks, researchers hope this innovation can support people who are looking to move away from smoking.
Looking Ahead
The study is small and based on self-reported experiences, so the findings should be interpreted with caution. However, the early results suggest that smart product design—such as protective barriers—can make nicotine products gentler on the mouth.
For smokers and nicotine users seeking alternatives with fewer side effects, solutions like Stingfree PROTEX® may offer a better option. At the same time, researchers stress that it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare professional before switching nicotine products.
